It will be very difficult for you and your puppy to be comfortable without having some of the most basic supplies. You also need to have bowls for water and food which are usually placed in the kitchen. If you eventually want your dog to stay in the backyard, make sure you will provide a doggy house that's warm and comfortable. Be cautious of where you put your dog's food and water while it's outside so that it won't get contaminated. You will need a leash and collar for your puppy and perhaps a tag with the puppy's name and your information on it in case your puppy is ever lost.
Some supplies are optional to buy, yet very useful for your puppy. Toys are good for playing with your puppy. Your puppy will be well trained if you give it treats for reinforcing good behavior. Also, if your puppy is teething make sure to provide it with chewy products and toys. A dog crate also comes in handy while training your puppy. Lastly, you may want ask your puppy's vet which products he or she recommends for washing your puppy.
In order to have a comfortable and safe environment for your new puppy to come home to, there are certain things that need to be taken care of beforehand. Here is a list of some things to take care of before bringing your puppy home.
1. Before even purchasing or adopting a puppy, make sure you will have the patience, compassion, money, and time to own a puppy. Without these things, you and your puppy will be unhappy.
2. Name your puppy. Don't give it a name that you aren't sure about and might change. Choose a name that you and the whole family will stick to so that your puppy gets used to being addressed by the same name.
3. If possible, ask your boss for some time off of work before you bring your puppy home. In the first couple of weeks your puppy needs to get use to its new owner and new home. If your puppy is less than five months old, it will need a lot of care and attention. The younger it your puppy is, the more helpless it is. If it is a bit older, you will need to be present to potty train your dog and to make it feel at home.
4. Prepare your puppy's sleeping and eating areas beforehand.
5. Puppy proof your home before your puppy enters. It is crucial to keep any dangerous or valuable objects away from your puppy. Again, this depends on the age of the puppy. When puppies are teething they will want to chew on almost anything. Try to keep shoes and other chewable objects out of the way and instead provide bones and other toys for your puppy to chew on.
6. It is very important to choose a vet for your puppy. It is good to take your puppy to the vet within a few days of bringing it home. The vet is a wonderful resource for letting you know which supplies you will need for your new puppy.
