Puppy Training Pad
We all know as faithful dog owners that potty training pads are an essential tool in helping form an understanding of what is a proper place to use the restroom. With this being said, there are some very important rules one must understand when attempting to use training pads as the method of potty training. Although there are various ways you can train a puppy to use a restroom, potty pads can be utilized in areas where walking your dog may be difficult or impossible due to other everyday life obligations, which is why training pads are efficient, useful and an overall great way to help train your puppy.
The key to using training pads effectively is to establish order and boundaries in your young puppy's life. Some of the basic rules one should follow are to make sure that you have a set schedule of times to feed, pee and play with your puppy, in addition to having distinct and predetermined areas where the puppy understands that there is an area for sleeping and an area for other bodily needs. Setting up potty pads in this area will seem unusual to the puppy at first, as the kitchen bar stools and ancient carpet seem a little more intriguing to urinate on. Apart from its normal 2-3 hours schedule, also look for when your puppy starts to pace, whine, or look confused as signals that your puppy may need to use the restroom soon. Moving your puppy to the pad and giving it a command to do its business there will help your puppy build an understanding.
The command can be as simple as "go potty," but whatever you choose, make sure that you use this command frequently and consistently. In the early stages of teaching your puppy how to use training pads, it is important to shower your puppy with praise when he/she finally does eliminate in the correct place. Puppies are eager to please, and praise and attention are the most effective ways for getting a desired behavior. If you catch your puppy eliminating in an area that is not their training pad, it is important not to try and punish or yell at your puppy. You should however, quickly take your puppy to its training pad and have them finish their business in the correct area, making sure to continue with positive reinforcement. Eventually, with a strict schedule, some disciplinary skilling and a lot of love and patience from you, your puppy will soon see that the potty pads are their friends.
