Puppy Harness Advantages
You are probably wondering what the differences are between having your puppy wear a collar or a harness. The collar goes around your puppy's neck, while the harness is wrapped around the puppy under its belly and is fastened on its back by a buckle. You must find the most comfortable sized harness for your puppy based on its weight. Harnesses come in different colors and styles as well. The most popular materials they come in are nylon and leather.
There are three types of harnesses: a body harness, no-pull harness, and head harness. Body harnesses are helpful for dogs of a smaller breed with wide necks and smaller heads that can slip out of a collar. These are also good for dogs that pull on their leash. However, it will chafe their armpit if they wear it all day. Therefore, be sure to give your dog breaks from its harness from time to time. Compared to the traditional harness, no-pull harnesses prevent pulling your dog. Instead, they guide your dog towards you. Lastly, the head harness has the leash connected to your puppy's jaw. It is good for dogs that often pull their leashes and comfortable enough to allow your dog to drink and bark. However, many dogs don't cooperate when wearing a head harness because it takes some getting used to.
There are some overall advantages that harnesses offer, while collars do not. As you are walking your puppy and it pulls you, naturally, you will probably snatch her leash when you need to take control. The way to do this without hurting her is by using a harness. As a human being, imagine how painful it would be if you were being pulled by the neck rather than your back or shoulders. A harness is the best option because it is much safer for your dog in the short and long run. Not only does it cause less pain now, but by using a harness, as opposed to a collar, future neck pain and the risk of a disc are extremely low.
In addition to being safe during walks, puppy harnesses are good to use when training your puppy. A young puppy in training is still physically developing and will suffer bodily damages from being pulled while wearing a collar because it will strain its neck immensely. Also, collars are not wise to use during training because your dog might form a habit of tugging on her leash. Pull-resistant harnesses tend to prevent this bad habit from forming. They are designed to prevent the puppy from pulling forward by putting some pressure on the puppy's shoulders. The puppy is then trained to realize that this pressure is a signal to stop moving forward. If the puppy is trained correctly with the harness, it understands that its owner is the one in control.
If you are still not sure about which harness is best for your puppy, ask your veterinarian or a pet store employee. They can guide you quite well in finding the right supplies for your puppy.
