How One Celebrity Involves the Fans in Puppy Naming
The recently famous pop star/singer Ke$ha has reached out to her fans for help. She posted on her Twitter page a picture of her new dachshund dog and asked her fans for their recommendations of the perfect name for her new pup. With the help of her fans, she narrowed it down to a few names such as Bacon, Iggy, Roxy and Jagger, or Bowie. When hearing about stories like this, it makes one realize how amazing it is that we have the ability to connect with one another through social media.
A celebrity can interact with her fans and followers through a simple screen and keyboard. Ke$ha articulately included her fans in her personal decision making process, while having the luxury of keeping her privacy all because of the ever-so-popular Twitter. She was able to interact with her followers on Twitter without having to give out any personal information whatsoever. Social media has become a revolution of its own due to the way it has changed human interactions. It creates the feeling of being connected with a person and a sense of intimacy. The fans are going to think to themselves, "Ke$ha actually read my Twitter response about her puppy's name!" As a result, her followers and fans are going to become even bigger fans because they feel like they are linked with the pop star in something personal.
In addition, this is a wonderful marketing technique for many artists due to the emotions it invokes in their fans. It somehow makes them feel a part of the celebrity's world. During the 50s, how and when did someone like Elvis Priestly or Lucille Ball have a chance to ask millions of fans what they think would be a good name for their puppy? If they wanted their fans' input the only way would probably be to go on television or the radio and have a few callers give their responses or to create something like a contest. It would take way too long if they wanted to wait for every fan's response.
Twitter and other social media have changed everything and made it possible for all fans to post something in a short amount of time. Before Facebook and Twitter, fans wrote fan mail to their favorite stars and perhaps the celebrity wrote back to a few of them or had his or her publicist respond. It was much less personal than what these social media websites have created. It is not certain that all celebrities personally answer their fans and update their own Twitter pages; however, there are some who do. Overall, it was very smart of Ke$ha to integrate the voice of her fans with deciding a name for her new puppy. This was the perfect example of the significance, impact, and globalization of social media.
