Initially serving as sled dogs and pack animals, these canines were essential to the survival of the Inuit peoples. One of the most popular sledding dogs, the Alaskan Malamute grew to be more than just a workhorse for its owners. The Malamute Eskimos, now known as Kuuvangmiut or Kobuk, treated their dogs well, feeding them regularly and socializing them with the community. As a result, the Alaskan Malamute has grown to be not only a working dog, but a part of the family.
